The History behind Cinco de Mayo

The information below was copied from the website: www.wikipidia.com. if you would like any more information you can go to that site.

HISTORY:
In 1861, Benito Juarez stopped making interest payments to countries that Mexico owed money to. In response, France[11] attacked Mexico to force payment of this debt. France decided that it would try to take over and occupy Mexico.[12] France was successful at first in its invasion; however, on May 5, 1862, at the city of Puebla, Mexican forces were able to defeat an attack by the larger French army. In the Battle of Puebla, the Mexicans were led by General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguín. Although the Mexican army was victorious over the French at Puebla, the victory only delayed the French advance on Mexico City. A year later, the French occupied Mexico. The French occupying forces placed Maximilian I, Emperor of Mexico on the throne of Mexico in 1864. The French, under pressure from the United States, eventually withdrew in 1866-1867. Maximilian was deposed by President Benito Juarez and executed, five years after the Battle of Puebla.

The Battle of Puebla was important for at least two reasons. First, although considerably outnumbered, the Mexicans defeated a much better-equipped French army. "This battle was significant in that the 4,000 Mexican soldiers were greatly outnumbered by the well-equipped French army of 8,000 that had not been defeated for almost 50 years."[13][14] Second, it was significant because since the Battle of Puebla no country in the Americas has been invaded by an army from another continent.

OVERVIEW:
Cinco de Mayo (Spanish for "fifth of May") is a regional holiday in Mexico, primarily celebrated in the state of Puebla, with some limited recognition in other parts of Mexico. The holiday commemorates the Mexican army's unlikely victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, under the leadership of Mexican General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguín.

Cinco de Mayo is not "an obligatory federal holiday" in Mexico, but rather a holiday that can be observed voluntarily. While Cinco de Mayo has limited significance nationwide in Mexico, the date is observed in the United States (also voluntarily) and other locations around the world as a celebration of Mexican heritage and pride. Cinco de Mayo is not Mexico's Independence Day,[8] which actually is September 16the most important national patriotic holiday in Mexico.

Be very carefull with the false congnates.

***FALSE COGNATES: are pairs of words in the same or different languages that are similar in form and meaning but have different roots. That is, they appear to be, or are sometimes considered, cognates, when in fact they are not. Even if false cognates lack a common root, there may still be an indirect connection between them.

How to use the VOSOTROS form of the subject pronoun

**** This information is taken from the website: www.braser.com

What it the vosotros verb form in Spanish?

A grammatical explanation
Vosotros, in grammatical terms, is second person plural familiar form of the verb. It occupies the fifth position on our verb paradigms (see the paradigm and examples at the end of this article).

But when do you use it?
If you already know something about the difference between 'tú' and 'usted', you can make the same comparison between 'vosotros' and 'ustedes'. In very broad terms, 'tú' is used for people you are friends with or on a first-name basis with, and 'usted' is for someone you might call 'Mr.' or 'Mrs.' in English. This is frequently called 'informal you' (tú) and formal you' (usted). Vosotros and ustedes are exactly the same thing, but in the plural form - that is, vosotros is 'informal you plural' and ustedes is 'formal you plural'.

Geographic usage
The vosotros form is used on a daily basis in Spain and rarely even heard in the rest of Spanish speaking world outside of church and in books and films that come from Spain, although people in other Spanish-speaking countries do understand it. Spanish speakers outside of Spain only use the 'ustedes' form for both formal and informal you plural.

March 23--- create 6 sentences using Querer and the clothing vocabulary given in class.

****Some groups got a worksheet for homework just idenitifying the images with the clothing vocabulary given in class.

Students have been studying the SER and ESTAR verbs and how to used them. I will give them a pop quiz today to see if they understand how to use it.

Homework: March 2, 2010

Create 12 sentences using the adjectives given in class, connecting them with SER and ESTAR.

Example:
SER: Yo (subject Proniount) Soy (verb:SER) Mexicana (adjective)
ESTAR: Yo (SP) Estoy (verb: estar) triste (adjective)

ESTAR: estoy, estas, esta, estamos, estais, esta
